Desiree

Desiree scores 5 on the waxy/floury scale and can be used for great roast potatoes and chips, creamy mash and also wedges. Desiree is also sold as a baking potato. This striking red-skinned maincrop potato, with a light yellow flesh is very widely available. This is a Main Crop variety.

Estima

Estima scores 4 on the waxy/floury scale. It is regarded as being versatile and is especially suited for dishes where a firm cooked potato texture is required, as in salads or some soups. Estima is also sold as a baking potato and has a mild taste that complements other flavours. Estima is the second most popular potato in terms of planting in the UK. It has a white to yellow skin and light yellow flesh and is widely available. This is a Second Early variety.

Hermes

Maincrop maturity, high yields, low tuber numbers and long dormancy.High dry matter and good fry colour. Susceptible to late blight on foliage, potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis and potato cyst nematode Globodera pallida . Tests show resistance to Powdery scab, potato leafroll virus, potato virus Yo and splitting.

King Edward

King Edward is very much a floury variety - scoring 6 on the waxy / floury scale, which is one of the highest scores. This makes King Edward a great variety for smooth creamy mash and light fluffy roast potatoes and even chips. King Edward is a traditional maincrop variety and has a white skin with very distinctive pink colouration which makes it an easy potato to identify. It has a creamy coloured flesh and a good flavour and is widely available. This is a Main Crop variety.

Maris Peer

This variety has a cream coloured skin and cream flesh, eyes are shallow to medium. Firm, cooked texture. This is a Second Early variety.

Maris Piper

Like Desiree, Maris Piper scores 5 on the waxy / floury scale. With its pleasant floury texture it is therefore ideal for many potato dishes from chips andMaris Piper roast potatoes, mash and wedges. Maris Piper is one of the best known and popular potato varieties on sale, with more Maris Piper grown across the UK than any other variety. It is also a great favourite with fish and chip shops because it is so reliable. It has a creamy coloured flesh and although technically its skin is white to yellow in colour, it is regarded as a ‘white’ potato and is widely available. This is a Main Crop variety

Pentland Dell

Maincrop maturity producing high yields, long dormancy. Good resistance to mild mosaic viruses, powdery scab and slugs. Susceptible to potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis , Globodera pallida and spraing. Moderately high dry matter with a tendency to disintegrate after boiling.

Barna

Excellent robust variety suitable for diverse culinary uses including French fries.  It has very good storage qualities and shows good resistance to viruses and diseases such as foliage and tuber blight, common scab, blackleg and black scurf.

Burren

Great variety for Mediterranean-like climates.  Burren is a long oval potato with shallow eyes, good drought resistance and good storage capability.  It is very high yielding and produces larger crops compared to Spunta.

Cabaret
Suitable for the pre-pack, French fry and chipping markets. Dry matter 21%. Produces high yields of bright bold tubers with shallow eyes. Excellent resistance to external and internal damage, enzymic browning, gangrene, blackleg, black scurf and black dot. Resistant to PCN Ro1. Long dormancy gives good long-term storability with stable fry colours.

Cara

Very robust variety with excellent resistance to drought, foliage and tuber blight and good resistance to common scab and viruses.  It is extremely high yielding and very uniform.  Cara is also a versatile potato suitable for a wide range of culinary uses including chipping.

Galactica

Excellent high yielding early parti-coloured variety.  Galactica shows very good foliage and tuber blight resistance rendering it also suitable for organic production.  It is very sensitive to Metribuzin (Sencor /Sencorex) and as a result this herbicide must not be used with Galactica. It gives, however, rapid ground cover upon germination assisting in natural weed control.

Gemson

Tubers have good resistance to splitting.  Trials have found good resistance to powdery scab, blackleg, silver scurf and potato leafroll virus.  This variety has low resistance to dry rot Fusarium sulphureum and Fusarium coeruleum , Bruising and late blight on tubers.  Tests for resistance to potato cyst nematode demonstrated susceptibility to both Globodera rostochiensis Ro1 and Globodera pallida Pa 2/3, 1.

Infinity
Infinity is an early maincrop and is suitable for crisping.
Markies

Exceptional fry quality, long-term storage with low reducing sugars, good dormancy. Very low requirement for nitrogen. High tolerance to drought stress. Late foliage maturity, but, early in setting tubers. Resistance to dry rot Fusarium coeruleum , late blight on tubers, blackleg, Bruising, splitting. Resistant to potato virus Yo and potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiensis Ro1 and susceptible to Globodera pallida Pa2/3,1.

Nectar

Nectar produces high numbers of tubers with very smooth skin and very suitable for pre-packing.  It has good resistance to tuber blight, gangrene and common scab while also keeping well in storage.  It is a potato suitable for stews and other dishes where a firm potato is required.

Purple Majesty

Purple Majesty is an early maincrop variety.  This variety is particularily suitable for salads / punnets.  Tubers have some resistance to bruising and splitting..  This variety has low resistance to dry rot and late blight on tubers. Tests for resistance to potato cyst eelworm demonstrated susceptibility to both Globodera rostochiensis Ro1 and Globodera pallida Pa 2/3, 1.

Rodeo

A good yielding, red, smooth skinned variety that produces long mild flavoured tubers that are versatile but particularly suitable for salad use.

 

Rooster

An excellent all-round potato combining beautiful taste with good yields.  Rooster produces excellent French fries and it is perfect for mashing and roasting.  As a special variety, careful seed handling is necessary for optimal crop results.

Russet Burbank

Maincrop maturity with moderate yields. High resistance to common scab. Susceptible to potato cyst nematode and drought with a tendency to produce misshapen tubers when moisture stress occurs. Moderately susceptible to tuber blight, mild mosaic virus, potato leaf roll virus and internal rust spot. Medium to high dry matter with good fry colour.

Savanna

A variety presenting excellent appearance, smooth skin and high yields of white-fleshed tubers suitable for washing.  Savanna shows very good resistance to common scab and Rhizoctonia and good resistance to tuber blight and gangrene.  It performs very well in warm climates and keeps well in storage.

Shepody

Early maincrop maturity producing high yields of large long oval tubers. Good resistance to blackleg, common scab, potato leaf roll virus, damage, bruising and spraing. Moderately susceptible to blight and potato virus Y. Susceptable to gangrene and potato cyst nematode. Medium to high dry matter with good fry colours.

Slaney

Very high yielding variety.  It produces a very vigorous canopy and abundant flowers.  Slaney is a very efficient nutrient user allowing less fertiliser applications. It eats well, being good for boiling, steaming baking and chipping.

Vivaldi is recognised by retailers as a sought after variety by the British consumer both as a 'baby potato' and as maincrop. Vivaldi is widely appreciated by British consumers for its taste and texture. Vivaldi produces high yields of attractive potatoes ideally suited for washing.
